HP All-In-One (AIO) devices

I've got an HP AIO (printer-scanner-fax) in the basement connected to an XP Pro machine.
I can use the client to connect to it and the client side machine running XP Pro 'sees' the device and XP auto-installs everything BUT an 'Unknown device'. The 'imaging device' (scanner) is installed and listed as normal but, applications can't actually reach it. Printing function is normal.
This does not happen when directly connected via USB so it would stand to reason something's not being passed correctly.
My primary reason for using for tool is that the 'server' machine connected to the printer can't run HP's software because the CPU 'doesn't meet the minimum requirements' which really means it can't identify it (the system runs on a mini-ITX board with a non-Intel CPU).
